30 years of partnership between PRATI and Germán Calvo shows that it is possible.
Can a successful business partnership begin without a contract?
It may sound like a strange question. But for Chiara Prati, CEO & CSO of PRATI srl, the answer is simple: “When it is built on unwavering trust, absolutely.”
This is precisely how the story of Prati and Germán Calvo began.
In 1997, the Prati family met Calvo in Argentina, where he was then working with Automación Gráfica S.A. From that meeting came a cooperation that has now lasted almost 30 years – an unusually long and valuable partnership in the international label industry.
Calvo became Prati’s representative in Argentina, at a time when the country’s economy was going through particularly difficult years. Yet the local market needed reliable solutions for self-adhesive labels, increasingly important not only for domestic production but also for companies looking towards export markets.
The story is told in an interesting interview published by Prati in its Solar Conversations series, a conversation with Germán Calvo that offers much more than a simple account of a business relationship. Read the full Solar Conversation with Germán Calvo.

Chiara Prati & German Calvo
Trust comes first
Reading Calvo‘s story, one element emerges particularly clearly: the partnership did not grow simply because there was a good product to sell.
It grew because there was trust.
When Prati supplied its first machine in Argentina, Pietro Prati personally travelled there and stayed for as long as necessary to provide complete training on the equipment.
Today this may sound obvious. In the 1990s, and especially when entering a distant and complex market, it was anything but.
It was an investment in people, in the customer and in the future of the market. An investment that requires the courage to look much further ahead than the immediate sale.
And this became part of Prati’s approach to international markets: be present.
Not simply through a local agent, but alongside the agent and the customer. Understand the market. Help solve problems. Train people. Remain available when things become difficult.
In other words, make the customer feel that the manufacturer is there. Always.
More than selling technology
Calvo‘s career followed a similar path. The same qualities that helped him build the relationship with Prati – resilience, courage, curiosity and the ability to build trust – also shaped his professional journey.
He continued to believe in his business through some of Argentina’s most challenging economic periods. And when digital technologies began transforming the printing industry, he chose not simply to follow the trend, but to create his own path, founding Digital&Flexo.
That is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this story.
Calvo did not limit his role to selling printing technology. He became a trusted consultant for his customers: someone able to understand their problems, discuss possible solutions and remain alongside them when the market became more difficult.
And earning trust is one thing. Keeping it for 30 years is quite another.
A partnership is built over time
The story of Prati and Germán Calvo therefore goes beyond a successful commercial relationship.
It is a small but significant example of how international business can work when technology, people and markets are connected by a common long-term vision.
After almost three decades, the partnership between Prati and Germán Calvo offers a simple lesson: in business, the most valuable investments are often those whose returns cannot be measured on the day the contract is signed.
A machine can start a relationship. A contract can formalise it.
But only trust, presence and mutual commitment can make it last.
