Giorgio Monferrato, Northern Italy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13528\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"BOBST_Rotomec5\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec5.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Guests coming from Italy, Europe and Asian \u00a0countries attended the event, held in a historic \u00a0Castle in the surrounding wine cultured hills, to \u00a0know what new is in the latest developments. \u00a0The speakers included representatives of leading \u00a0international companies from throughout the \u00a0flexible packaging value chain,and Bobst \u00a0experts, addressed the challenges and \u00a0opportunities that the latest materials, systems \u00a0and production tools represent to the growth \u00a0strategies of printing and converting companies.<\/p>\n<h1 lang=\"en-US\">Barrier technologies<\/h1>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">New barrier technologies are developing at a very fast pace and a new generation of clear films and coatings are challenging more traditional barrier packaging structures. As regards the technicalities of manufacturing and the physical properties of these new materials, the presentations from Bobst Manchester and Reifenh\u00e4user were particularly insightful. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13533\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_160251.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13533\" class=\"wp-image-13533 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_160251-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Duplex laminate of 12 micron PET preprinted substrate laminated to a 7 micron aluminium foil substrate\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_160251-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_160251.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13533\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duplex laminate of 12 micron PET preprinted substrate laminated to a 7 micron aluminium foil substrate<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr<strong> Carolin Strulle<\/strong>r from Bobst Manchester, illustrated the company\u2019s in-depth research on <em>AlOx<\/em> clear coating, from the way it is produced and its performance on various filmic substrates, through to its barrier retention with subsequent processes of printing and converting. Bobst Manchester has, and continues to, carry out extensive trials on the process and is researching ways that in the future could enhance their printability and prevent barrier loss during converting.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong>Kurt Freye<\/strong> and <strong>Daniele Cerizzi<\/strong> from Reifenh\u00e4user Kiefel Extrusion and Reifenh\u00e4user Cast Sheet Coating introduced\u00a0the latest developments in blown film and cast extrusion for high barrier applications which reflect the trend for lower pack weights yet with increasing pack performance. This makes 9 to 11 layer films an important trend which has generated several ongoing projects for machines which can produce increasingly sophisticated multi-layer structures using less material.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Paolo Serafin<\/strong>, for Taghleef Industries, presented their <em>Extendo<\/em> film applications, offering solutions for better recycling. He also advocated that the day should to be a forum for discussion and cooperation within an industry aiming to find solutions for reducing the environmental impact of packaging.<br \/>\n<\/span>Concerning\u00a0short run gravure printing, <strong>Stuart Jones<\/strong> of Janoschka spoke about the innovations the company has been working on in rotogravure sleeve systems, as well as on the retail trends for mass customization.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Professor <strong>Armin Weichmann<\/strong>, from Stuttgart Media University, illustrated the studies that the institute is carrying out on conductive layers, cylinder stability and the feasibility of nickel to replace copper and chromium in engraved cylinders. The professor also spoke about how the <em>Rotomec MW 60<\/em> gravure press installed in the university press room is a key part of all its projects because it nears productions conditions &#8211; something which is essential for the validity of the trials carried out on the behalf of converters.<\/p>\n<h1><span lang=\"en-US\">Gravure technology<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0The gravure technology update was rounded up by <strong>Giovanni \u00a0Caprioglio<\/strong> from <strong>Bobst Italia<\/strong>, who illustrated the comprehensive \u00a0range of Bobst\u00a0gravure presses for flexible materials, focusing on the \u00a0Minimized Waste concept of the <em>Rotomec MW 60 \u0399 80<\/em> press. Dedicated \u00a0to very short run printing, the <em>Rotomec MW 80<\/em> brings together all the \u00a0essential requisites for profitable operation, namely minimized waste of \u00a0material, minimized energy consumption and minimized space \u00a0requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0Of great interest to all participants was the insightful presentation of \u00a0<strong>Philippe Roulet<\/strong> from Nestl\u00e9, who illustrated all the factors that \u00a0determine the way packaging needs to evolve in order to better respond \u00a0to the new and diverse requirements of the consumer. Breaking the \u00a0rules, generating value for the consumer, streamlining and \u00a0standardizing the structures of materials wherever possible, and \u00a0implementing new technologies into processes were just a few of the key issues presented. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13530\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec7-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"BOBST_Rotomec7\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec7-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BOBST_Rotomec7.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">A press completely operated from floor level, the 850 mm web-width <em>Rotomec MW 80<\/em> awaited the open house guests in Bobst Italia\u2019s Technology Center and was ready to start printing a demo job on a 12 micron PET substrate coated with AlOx.<br \/>\n<\/span>One highlight of the gravure demonstration was the capability of Bobst technology to handle <em>AlOx<\/em> coated substrates which, in differing from conventional films, present challenges to printing and converting equipment. A further highlight was the effectiveness of the MW 80 on-board washing system. The print run also showed the validity of the <em>Bobst MW Minimized Waste concept<\/em>, starting with the <em>TAPS<\/em> function to set the machine in register. At the completion of the TAPS sequence, which lasted a few minutes, the screen on the machine registered incomparably low substrate waste.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_23.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13534\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_23-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"BobstRotomec_23\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_23-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_23-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.metaprintart.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/BobstRotomec_23.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0After an automatic splice, carried out on the rewinder at maximum \u00a0speed, a print sample master was collected before changing the color on \u00a0one print unit from light peach to very dark brown and resuming \u00a0printing at full production speed. The speed of changeover being very \u00a0critical in terms of profitability when printing very short runs, an \u00a0operator demonstrated how fast and easy it was on a print unit which \u00a0was in stand-by during printing. After a few minutes of printing, the \u00a0machine was stopped and the washing sequence of the cylinder and ink \u00a0pan started on a selected print unit, prior to the ink being changed back \u00a0from dark brown to the original light peach color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">We could follow the on-board washing sequence from animations displayed on a screen and to check, on a separate screen, the register accuracy and stability, most particularly during acceleration and deceleration. After another automatic splice at maximum production speed, the machine was stopped and a second sample taken in order to measure the color difference with the print sample master.<br \/>\nThe Delta E value between the two compared samples was very low, clearly showing the efficiency of the Bobst internal washing system in avoiding contamination from one color to the other, especially considering the great difference of shades in reverting back from a very dark brown intermediate color. Once the demonstration was over, guests were able to get close to the machine to visually see the results of the washing sequences from the ink pan and cylinders which were taken out of the MW 80 press for checking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">A demonstration on the <em>Bobst CL 850D<\/em>, confirmed the laminator\u2019s quality, efficiency and flexibility. The machine, featuring the renowned Bobst flexo coating system, laminated a 7.0 micron aluminium substrate onto a 12 micron PET film. The Rotomec system enables a lower coating weight of solvent-based adhesive to be applied directly to the aluminium foil, creating excellent bond strength. La versione italiana, con l\u2019editing e la prefazione di Wilma Coero Borga, \u00e8 in attesa di pubblicazione. Nel 2020 pubblica Il Segreto dei Dieci Laghi (DiMarsico Libri Editore), un romanzo ambientato sulle Ande, dedicato alla cultura Inca e all\u2019alfabeto dei nodi. Nel 2021, in self-publishing, esce I Cavalieri Astrali, scritto con Stefano Gatti (Stegat), una raccolta di quattro racconti iperdeterministici con un intermezzo quantistico curato da un professore universitario di fisica quantistica. Nel 2022 pubblica Un cerchio di stelle, basato sul diario di viaggio scritto nel 1960 durante un\u2019avventura in autostop alla scoperta dell\u2019Europa nascente. Nell\u2019aprile 2024, per De Ferrari Editore, esce I Briganti del Vigoleno, una fiaba per adulti o un racconto per ragazzi, scritto a quattro mani con Wilma Coero Borga.
