 Aesthetics of fonts and paper.”
 A special lecture by an Italian letterpress-printer.

In the digital age, the visual and tactile delights experienced by reading books set by hand in type fonts of great beauty and printed on hand-made papers, has never been so well celebrated as it will presented in these two days in New York.

This will be celebrated by a unique series of four handmade books concerning the aesthetics of print, by worldwide-famous Enrico Tallone printer. The works contain original printed samples from the ‘Thirties’ of the previous century, with papers samples and watermarks of the last six centuries – from those made at the time of Johannes Gutenberg and Aldus Manutius, to the Batchelor’s Kelmscott paper created for William Morris, and those skillfully made by the most illustrious paper makers from the early twentieth century to the present days.

The daunting task of collecting all this material within the covers of the four Manuali Tipografici, each of them printed in some 300 copies, has been possible due to the more than one century-old history of the Tallone typographic studio, described in the documentary.

And moreover, the day before, Thursday November 20th, will occur a special evening from 6 to 8 pm, at the Grolier Club, 47 East 60th Street, New York for a presentation of “12 POESIE/12 POEMS” a limited edition book of poems by Alfredo De Palchi and watercolors by Fulvio Testa, printed by Tallone Editore.

Through this collaboration between poet, painter and printer, comes the edition consisting of 90 numbered copies, with an original watercolor by Fulvio Testa in each volume. The colophon is signed by the author, the artist and the printer.
De Palchi’s 12 poems are printed in both Italian and English. Dating from the late 1940s to the present, the poems are set in chronological order. The book was set by hand in Caslon Type, cast from original Mats and letterpress printed in Alpignano, by Enrico Tallone.

Fulvio Testa is a painter and illustrator based in Manhattan and Verona, Italy. Testa has had many exhibitions of his watercolors in the United States and Europe, most recently at Jill Newhouse Gallery and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects. He has illustrated an acclaimed NYRB edition of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, translated by Jeffrey Brock and, more recently, a second volume of Aesop’s Fables for Andersen Press, London.

The poet Alfredo De Palchi, a New Yorker since the early nineteen sixties, was born in Verona. He also had an influence on American poetry as Editor-in-Chief of Chelsea Literary Review. De Palchi is now the publisher of Chelsea Books.
